Answer: How have your individual communication skills changed with the innovations in technology? How have advancements in technology altered classroom communication? Will these change further?
With the change in technology, my communication style has had to change as well. I love to talk to people, in person, on the phone, any way. Many times what you want to say someone does not translate well over email. If I need to have a serious conversation with a student or a parent, I will oftentimes email the student and say come see during these hours, or email the parent and say, “When would be the best time to reach you by phone?” For shorter check-ins, I will just be cognizant of my tone and how the language might come off. If it is strictly an online platform, a time when you can have face to face dialog with individual students set up would be valuable.
